DRACO by Steve Coe 13" f/5.6 unless noted NGC 2977 Faint, pretty large, elongated 2 X 1 and not brighter in the middle at 100X. NGC 3144 Very faint, small, round, not brighter in the middle. Could only been held with averted vision on a night I rated 6/10 for transparency. NGC 3147 Pretty bright, pretty large, little elongated, with a much brighter core at 100X. It is just seen in the 11X80 finder. In moments of good seeing at 135X, it has a stellar core. NGC 3183 Faint, pretty small, somewhat elongated, not brighter in the middle at 100X. NGC 3329 Pretty bright, pretty small, little elongated 1.5 X 1 in PA 120, brighter in the middle at 150X. There is a group of galaxies that are very, very faint, located to the NW about 10 arcmin, they never were distinct separate objects, just "lumpy space". NGC 3403 Faint, pretty large, elongated 1.8 X 1 in PA 60, gradually little brighter in the middle, low surface brightness at 150X. NGC 3735 Pretty bright, large, very much elongated 3 X 1 in PA 135, much brighter in the middle. This nice edge-on shows a nuclear bulge at 150X. NGC 4125 Pretty bright, pretty large, elongated 2X1 E-W, has a much brighter middle with an elongated core section at 135X. I can see its' very faint companion (NGC 4121) only at the very best sites, it is very faint, pretty large and not brighter in the middle at 100X. NGC 4128 Pretty faint, pretty small, elongated 2X1 with a bright middle at 200X in good seeing. There is a non-stellar bright spot on the west side of this galaxy. NGC 4133 Pretty faint, pretty small, round, somewhat brighter middle. NGC 4236 Very faint, very large, much elongated with a brighter middle at 100X. There is a somewhat brighter oval center section. The surface of this object is very mottled. It is not easy from some of the darkest sites in Arizona. The integrated magnitude of 10.7 is very deceiving. It is much elongated 5X1 in PA 165. very gradually very little brighter in the middle, with a low surface brightness. Ken Reeves calls this a BARF object= Big And Real Faint. NGC 4256 Pretty bright, large, very much elongated 3 X 1 in PA 45, much brighter in the middle with an almost stellar nucleus at 150X. This thin spindle grows longer with averted vision. NGC 4291 Pretty bright, small, round, bright middle at 150X. The "3* foll" by Wm. H. are 9 to 10 mag, there is also a 13th mag star at the western edge of the galaxy. NGC 4319 Pretty faint, pretty small with a much brighter core at 135X. On the very best nights at higher powers you can see the quasar Markarian 205 which is 30" south of the core. It is the center of a red shift controversy, evidence concerning whether or not this object is involved in the galaxy is not conclusive. Of course, Mark 205 was just a stellar point even at 8000 ft. altitude on a night I rated 10/10 for transparency. I wish I had a telescope that made quasars more than just a stellar point, I wonder if Boller and Chivens take Mastercard? NGC 4386 Pretty bright, pretty large, elongated 1.8 X 1 in PA 135, much brighter middle at 150X. Grows much thicker with averted vision. NGC 4589 Pretty bright, pretty large, elongated 1.5X1 E-W at 100X. It has a much brighter middle. There is a close companion (4572) that is averted vision only, it is very faint and pretty small. NGC 4648 Pretty faint, small, little elongated and brighter in the middle at 135X. NGC 4750 Pretty bright, pretty small, round, somewhat brighter in the middle with an almost stellar nucleus at 150X. This galaxy is mottled and grows much larger with averted vision. NGC 5678 Bright, pretty large, elongated 2 X 1 in PA 0, gradually brighter in the middle at 150X. NGC 5866 Bright, large, much elongated 3 X 1 in PA 120 degrees, high surface brightness, gradually much brighter middle at 165X. The dark lane has been easy on nights of good seeing and transparency. On mushy nights the dark lane is not seen at any power, even though this lens-shaped galaxy has a high surface brightness. Averted vision makes it grow somewhat and a stellar nucleus is held steady about half the time. This galaxy became famous as M 102, but I will leave that controversy for another night. 5866A 150X Faint, pretty small, round, not brighter middle. NGC 5879 Pretty bright, pretty small, elongated 2X1, brighter middle at 165X. NGC 5905 Pretty bright, pretty large, much brighter middle, round at 100X NGC 5907 Bright, large, very much elongated, bright middle at 100X. At 200X the core is gradually brighter with a stellar nucleus. 13" Camp 613 9/10 150X--pretty bright, large, very much elongated 5X1 in PA 165, gradually brighter in the middle with a stellar nucleus. 220X shows a hint of a dark lane, thin but there about 30% of the time, it runs just north of the nucleus. 36" f/5 20mm Nagler TSP 96 6/10 seeing 8/10 trans-- dark lanes cuts the galaxy right down the middle, a perfect edge on. splits the core perfectly, galaxy is 80% of the width of the field of view. Two knots to left of core. NGC 5908 Pretty faint, pretty large, much brighter middle, elongated 3X2 in PA 135 at 150X. The center section is elongated. NGC 5949 Pretty faint, pretty small, elongated 2 X 1 in PA 135, gradually little brighter middle at 150X. There is a nice matched pair double star 10 arcmin north. NGC 5982 Pretty bright, small, little elongated 1.2 X 1 in PA 135, suddenly much brighter in the middle at 150X. This galaxy has a high surface brightness. NGC 5985 Pretty bright, large, elongated 2 X 1 in PA 15, little brighter in the middle, very mottled at 150X. This large galaxy has a pretty low surface brightness. NGC 6015 Pretty bright, pretty large, much brighter middle. At 135X there is a faint star involved in the south side. NGC 6140 Faint, pretty small, little elongated in PA 90, very little brighter in the middle, not much at 100X. NGC 6236 Suspected on a 6/10 night, at the limit of the 13", averted vision only. NGC 6285 and 6286 both very faint, pretty small and not brighter in the middle at 135X. NGC 6290 and 91 are at the limit of the 13" even at the best of sites. They can be detected at 135X, but no definite shape can be determined, just an shapeless glow. NGC 6338 Faint, pretty small, elongated 2 X 1, not brighter in the middle at 135X. It is the brightest in the group of three. NGC 6340 Pretty faint, pretty small, round, much brighter in the middle at 135X. There is a double star on the north side. NGC 6345 and 6346 both very faint, small and amorphous at 135X. These two form a North-South pair. NGC 6370 Pretty faint, pretty small, mot brighter in the middle at 135X. There is a 6th mag star 5' north, making this NGC 404's little brother, with a bright star near a small galaxy. NGC 6412 Pretty bright, large, somewhat brighter middle, round. There are two stars involved. It looks very mottled and grainy at 135X. NGC 6503 Pretty bright, large, much elongated 3X1 in PA 120, somewhat brighter middle at 100X. Going to 220X on this low surface brightness galaxy does not help much. NGC 6543 Bright, large, elongated 1.8 X 1. The central star can be seen at all powers, but is stellar only on the best of nights. Using 250X to 320X there is much detail within the planetary. Two brighter curved areas give the impression of spiral structure. The very center of the nebulosity does not get near the central star, somewhat like M-42, where the nebulosity has been blown away from the central Trapezium. 13" great night near the Grand Canyon, light green, elongated 2X1 in PA 45, central star obvious, small dark donut around the central star. This donut of material is neon green, it really does seem to glow. Very nice at 330X. Ultimate Star Party, McDonald Obs. Oct. 95, S=6, T=8, 25" f/5-- NGC 6543 in 25" with 12mm, central star obvious, dark area seen around central star. There are several bright regions in the oval rings of material around the star. NGC 6643 Pretty bright, pretty large, elongated 2 X 1 in PA 45, and somewhat brighter in the middle at 100X. It is very mottled and there is a double star on the west side. NGC 6651 Extremely faint, pretty large, little elongated 3X2, not brighter in the middle at 100X. This is one of the dimmest objects I have ever been able to confirm seeing with the 13" and that was on a night I rated 10/10 at 8000 ft. in the mountains of eastern Arizona. NGC 6654 Pretty faint, pretty small, somewhat brighter middle at 100X. This galaxy is embedded within a nebulosity with is very faint, pretty large, elongated 2 X 1, approximately 8' X 16'. The nebula is difficult on a night I rated 10/10. NGC 6742 150X very faint, pretty small, not brighter in the middle, no star seen in center, round disk. A low surface brightness nebula and the UHC does not help. Not much. The Draco Dwarf ( UGC 10822 ) Very faint, very large, elongated 1.5 X 1 in PA 110 degrees at 60X. There are 10 stars involved across the face of the galaxy. I do not know if they are truly members of this nearby Local Group Galaxy. It is just a grainy lump at even this very low power and I was using a dark cloth (the monk's hood) over my head at an excellent site on a night rated at 8/10 for transparency. I was using a 38mm Erfle eyepiece in a 2" barrel. So, if you are going to chase this very low surface brightness object, put in your lowest power. Double Stars Eta is a tight pair and was never cleanly split on a night with 7/10 seeing at 320X. A figure-eight shape was the best I could do. Mu is elongated at 165X and cleanly split at 285X. Struve 2155 is easy to split at 100X, the stars are yellow and light blue. VW DRA is very nearby, a nice orange variable star. Omicron is a wide pair that is easily split at 100X. I have always seen the colors as light yellow and blue. Psi is almost a matched pair, easily split at 100X. The brighter of the two is white, the dimmer star is yellowish white. 39 is a wide pair at 100X. Going to 165X splits one of the stars to a white and bluish close pair. Otto Struve the Younger 123 this very wide pair can be split in the 11 X 80 finder. In the 13" at 100X, the pair is yellow and blue. There is a third star nearby, estimated magnitude of 12 and located East about 20". Nu Very easy split at 100X, both off white in color. 16 + 17 One of these pairs is very wide and easy enough to be split in the 11X80 finder. The other pair is notched at 100X and split at 200X. Struve 2348 is easily split at 100X, it is a nice yellow and blue pair in a rich field. 46 is a very wide pair, easy at 100X, white and light blue. Struve 2573 easy split at 100X, white and light blue. Epsilon is not constantly split at any power up to 320X. In good seeing the "bulge" on the North side of the primary will split out for a short time and then merge again. Red Stars T Draconis is a dimmer V Hydrae, a very red star in the 13" at 100X. UX DRA is a beautiful dark orange star at 100X.
